C&D Product Use: Churngold, Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, Laing O'Rourke
The Prowaste Team would like to congratulate all three finalists for the fantastic efforts made in using recycled materials and products on major construction projects. We feel that all the companies deserve the recognition they will get from being nominated.
Below is a description of the projects and why they were nominated:
Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions
Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, as a member of the @one Alliance, completed a 2.2km mains reinforcement scheme in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, between August 2008 and January 2009.
The submission describes the process of removing excavated material, transporting it from the site, blending it with a proprietary cementitious binder and the associated benefits of reduced transport costs, avoiding the use of new materials and achieving a 30 percent reduction in costs.
The project requires 3,000 tonnes of excavation: 1,500 tonnes were taken to produce a soil stabilising material, while the remaining 1,500 tonnes went to a nearby recycling centre to be processed for third party use – meaning 100 percent recycling was achieved.
Churngold Construction Ltd
Churngold’s entry centred on the development of a central waste treatment facility (CWTF) operated by Lancashire County Council.
Located on the western bank of the River Wyre, the CWTF’s location meant particular attention was paid to surface water run-off and drainage. Two water drainage systems were selected: Envirokerb for roadside drainage and Recyfix HICAP high capacity channels for access and service areas. Both Hauraton-supplied products are made from 100 percent recycled materials.
The drainage systems are in-keeping with the thinking behind the CWTF and held “close the loop” by using components made from recycled waste. The use of these two products helped divert 5.2 tonnes of plastic waste from landfill.
Laing O’Rourke Infrastructure – M4, J11 & Mereoak Improvements Project Team This construction project for Reading Borough Council includes the construction of an enlarged, signalised four-lane gyratory; new over-bridges across the M4 accommodating four traffic lanes in each direction; a new two-way bus only lane; widening of the existing A33 dual carriageway and a cable stayed footbridge.
The application describes the measures taken to source waste materials from elsewhere, including pulverised fuel ash from Didcot power station, recycled mixed glass from local manufacturers and recycled on-site demolition materials reprocessed under licence from the Environment Agency.
This all contributed to a reduced need for new aggregate, reduced haulage costs and a saving of approximately 30 percent on the choice of traditional materials. |
